Greater Kashmir SRINAGAR | July 9, 2014, Wednesday STATE epaper.GreaterKashmir.com Sexual assault case ‘closure’ aftermath Other states join demand for fresh, impartial probe Srinagar, July 9: Demanding fresh and impartial probe into the sexual assault case against Director Health Saleem-ur-Rehman, students, activists, and para-medical staff Wednesday staged protests in various states of country. They also demanded setting up of a committee under Vishakha guidelines with immediate effect. Protestors raised various questions over the closure of sexual assault case against some health officials. “We witnessed blatant violations of the rule of law, flouting of legal procedures, denial of justice and character assassination of complainants with intent to subvert justice. The most glaring example of this is the case of a nurse employed in J&K Health Department who complained of serial harassment over years by several health department officials,” said Shehla Rashid Shora, social activist and JNU student. She said that under media pressure, “an illegally constituted one-man committee called the complainant for ‘investigation’ but her statement was not recorded.” Shora said that the committee was in complete violation of Supreme Court guidelines as it should have been headed by a woman, at least half of the members should be women and that an external member who has understanding of these issues should be on the committee. “When the one-man committee gave a ‘clean chit’ to the Director, the J&K Health Minister, Taj Mohiuddin is on on record to have said that, from day one he knew the Director Health was innocent. This statement is nothing but a blatant admission of bias,” she added. Protestors demanded constitution of a committee under Vishakha guidelines. “A fresh, High Court monitored probe should be initiated in to the case. Workplace anti sexual harassment committees should be constituted by all workplaces in J&K and the State Women’s Commission should overlook the formation of the same within a reasonable time frame,” they demanded. “The accused in such cases should not be allowed to hold high posts till the enquiry is over. The Union Health Ministry must ensure compliance with sexual harassment at workplace to check harassment of female medicos in hospitals and other health cen- tres,” they added. They said they were protesting against the lapses in the molestation case and increasing harassment of women at workplaces. “Similar cases of harassment of paramedical staff and female medicos have been reported from elsewhere. In all of these cases, nursing professionals were denied the right to have an anti sexual harassment committee as per Vishakha guidelines,” they said. They informed apart from this protest today at Sri Pratap Park here, same resentment is expressed in Nirman Bhawan Delhi; Dadar Station Mumbai and in Thrissur Kerala against the closure of case and character assassination of the complainant. Protestors included members of JNU Students Union, IUST Students Union, United Nurses Association Kerala and All India Progressive Women’s Association. Meanwhile, activists from Mumbai confirmed to Greater Kashmir that they held a protest in solidarity with protesters in Srinagar.
