Greater Kashmir SRINAGAR | July 11, 2014, Friday Srinagar, July 10: A former divisional commander of Hizbul Mujahedeen was on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment in a murder case in Pattan area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district nine years ago. The district and additional sessions judge Baramulla, Tasleem Arief convicted Maqsood Ahmad Bhat on charges of murdering Dr Reyaz Ahmed Bhat in 2005. The additional Sessions Judge Baramulla observed that ‘this is a case of murder without any enmity.’ “There is nothing so uncommon about this crime to deem it as exceptional case in which instead of life imprisonment, death sentence could be awarded. Though the innocent has lost life in the instant case but it does not fall in the category of rarest of rare cases where the death sentence is warranted,” the court observed. “The convict is therefore sentenced to imprisonment for life for the commission of offence u/s 302 RPC and 7/27 I A Act,” said the Judge in his order. According to the prosecution, the accused Maqsood Bhat killed Dr Reyaz Ahmed Bhat of Hanzura Pattan, a PDP Block President, on June 16, 2005. “A case under FIR no. 87/2005 under section 302 of the RPC was registered in police station Pattan”. According to police, Maqsood Ahmad Bhat alias Tariq alias Altaf Sheikh of Parraypora in Mamoosa Pattan was apprehended by the police from Pattan on 15 January in 2007. “Bhat, a Hizb divisional commander, was active in north Kashmir since 1996 and involved in the killing of eleven people including the PDP Block President Dr Reyaz Ahmed Bhat,” said the chargesheet. (GNS) 1 dies in road accident Srinagar, July 10: A sumo driver died in a road accident in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district. Police said a Tata Sumo bearing registration number JK09-2710 skidded off the road and fell in a gorge at Tia Mode Karnah, resulting in on spot death of the driver, Tanveer Ahmad son of Raja Shabir Ahmad resident of Teetwal. The body was handed over to his legal hairs for last rites. Police has registered a case in this regard. Former speaker Abdul Ahad Vakil passes away Demise widely condoled Srinagar, July 10: Senior National Conference leader and former speaker of Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Abdul Ahad Vakil, passed away on Wednesday evening after a prolonged ailment at his LD Colony, Goripora residence here. He was 79. “He was suffering from a chest ailment and had been hospitalized in SKIMS a month back. He was subsequently discharged, however Wednesday evening he breathed his last after suffering from multiple organ failure,” family sources said. Vakil joined politics at an early age and was a Member of Parliament in 1977, then became a state minister in 1983. He was elected speaker of the state Legislative Assembly in 1996. Driver injured in mishap Srinagar, July 10: A driver was injured when his truck touched a live wire in Qazigund area of south Kashmir. Joginder Singh son of Cheat Ram resident of Samba got was injured when his truck bearing registration number JK02AD-7818 touched a live wire at Alstop, Qazigund He was shifted to hospital for treatment.
