Institute decries LAWDA inaction

Srinagar, Aug 1: In flagrant
violation of Master Plan, a medical clinic in Hamza Colony,
Bemina, has come up in the
residential colony, the locals
complained.
“While the clinic is presently expanding its area by
further illegal construction,
the authorities bound to stop it
are looking the other way,” the
locals said.
The residents alleged that
the clinic, a commercial establishment, was constructed without
building permission. “With the
authorities keeping silent to the
flagrant violation of the Master
Plan the clinic is now being
expanded further,” they said.
They alleged that the “landlord enjoys proximity with
some politicians in the government and is therefore evading
any action from the authorities.”
“The height is that the construction was even continued on
the day of Eid so that it is completed immediately,” they said.
“The Srinagar Municipal
Corporation and the Housing
Board too has not taken any
action against the illegal construction though it’s taking
place at a stone’s throw from the
office of Chief Town Planner,”
they said.
They appealed the District
Development Commissioner
Farooq Ahmed Shah and the
SMC Commissioner Dr GN
Qasba to personally look into
the matter.

Srinagar, Aug 1: National Institute of Technology
Hazartbal has decried
inaction of authorities
over allegedly illegal constructions going around
the NIT and sought intervention of senior officials
into the matter.
NIT officials said they
had many times taken
up the matter of ongoing
illegal constructions on
eastern side of its campus
with the Lakes and
Waterways Development
Authority (LAWDA).
“The recent negligence of LAWDA is the
ongoing construction of
Tehsil Office building
near the main gate of
the NIT on the west and
construction of a number
of houses and huts on the
east side of the
campus right on the
banks of Dal lake by some
inhabitants of Dhobi
Ghat,” said an NIT official wishing anonymity.
“Though the NIT
officials reported these
illegal constructions
before the authorities
of LAWDA and SMC
through its Estates
Engineer, nothing was
done to put an end to
these irregularities or
to stop these illegal constructions till date,” he
said.
Official said the NIT
complex spread over
64 acres is facing difficulties in raising the
structures as most of
the campus falls within
the LAWDA restriction
of 200 meters.
“This has hampered
growth of the Institute
in terms of construction
of hostels, classrooms,
new laboratories and
departments, however
on the other hand the

boys drowned in flood spill channel near Solina Bund while bathing

Omar Abdullah has sanctioned
relief of Rs 1 lakh in favor of the
family of Abid Ahmad Dar, a
Shikarawala who two days ago
died in an accident near the Boulevard when a vehicle fell over
his Shikara in Dal lake, an official
handout Friday said.
“Senior National Conference leader Muhammad Sayeed
Akhoon met the Chief Minister
in this regard and discussed the
issue. He also discussed various
development matters pertaining

to Srinagar, particularly Hazratbal
constituency,” the handout said.
On July 30, the boatman
died when a speeding car lost
control and crashed straight
into the Dal lake near Shikara
Ghat.
Witnesses alleged that the
driver was drunk while police is
tight-lipped on the issue. The accident triggered protests against
liquor shops and bars operational
along the Boulevard with protesters demanding immediate closure
of such outlets.

The Chhari-Pujan is an age
old tradition which is performed
every year at Dashnami Akhara
temple on the day of Nag Panchhami, it added. “Large numbers
